The Strange History of Landscaping

Though the term “landscape architecture” has only been around since the early 1800’s, landscaping itself has been around since the Garden of Eden. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are legendary and were once one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Though their location has never been verified, the 16th-century Dutch engraving of the Hanging Gardens depicts a lush, green tropical garden full of exotic flowers, trees and fountains.

The Hanging Gardens are the ideal concept of what landscape architecture can accomplish. All you need is the right plan, then the tools and people to execute your dream landscape. With the right combination of elements, plants, shrubs and trees, you can create something so beautiful that you’ll never want to leave.

The ancient Romans greatly contributed to much of today’s modern art, technology, literature and even in areas such as law and engineering. They also created incredibly beautiful gardens that accented their unique and elegant architecture which is still so popular today. As if building something as breathtaking as the Colosseum wasn’t enough, the Colosseum has a long and well-documented history of plants and vegetation. In fact, 684 species of plants have been identified and cataloged there.

Experts believe that the reason why there were and are such a broad range of plants and vegetation in this area is connected to the climate, which has drastically changed over the centuries favoring various types of plants at some point over others. The very first appearance of what is today considered modern landscaping occurred during the Roman Empire. The ancient Romans combined a wide variety of plants, trees and shrubs with ponds and fountains to create the perfect outdoor space for meditation.

They may have taken some of their ideas from Japanese and Chinese gardens, which were designed to include religious symbols. That way they could serve as a place of refuge where someone could go and pray or meditate and just enjoy the lovely fragrance of flowering Jasmine and Bougainvillea. The ancient Persians are credited with inventing underground aqueducts to keep their lavish gardens green and thriving even in an arid environment.

Many of Italy’s great painters gave us an excellent and very unique record of the various types of flora alive on the earth hundreds of years ago. Da Vinci’s paintings often have trees, plants, streams, rocks and other natural elements that give us clues as to what areas like Rome, Venice and Bologna might have looked like 500 years ago.

Today, modern landscapers have a much more challenging task because of how populated most areas have become. They must often work around buildings, shopping centers, busy skylines and many other obstacles in order to come up with a gorgeous landscape design. Just as with ancient Roman landscapers though, a truly exceptional landscape architect has a natural ability to understand how to transform an environment into the perfect outdoor space for entertaining, meditation or just plain old fun.
