Once you start raising your budget, not only can you find more options, you can start thinking about moving up to a riding mower. Of course, if you have a big budget, but not a big lawn, this might not be the best idea. There are still some great push mower options in this budget range, if you don’t have the room or need for a riding mower.
Push Mowers
There are some extremely high-quality, borderline professional push mowers on the market at this budget point. There are a number of electric lawn mowers, but we’ve already covered the best electric lawn mower, in our previous article, with the Ego Power+.
If you’re looking for a push mower that can handle a lot of work, the Toro Consumer 30″ Timemaster is as good as it gets. A 30-inch mower deck allows you to cut down on the number of passes you’ll need to make to take care of the lawn. The Personal Pace self-propel system lets you take your own pace as well, and adjusts speed as needed. The high-powered Briggs & Stratton engine can chew through heavy grass and brush. The electric push-button start means no more yanking a cord trying to get your mower started as well. Coming in at $1,149.99, it may be more expensive than some riding mowers but in terms of the job it can perform, there are none better.
Riding Mowers
With this budget, you can find a number of riding mowers. They will be simple, with few amenities – but also, easy to maintain thanks to their simplicity. There also aren’t that many of them. Often, in this budget, lightly used riding mowers can be a good deal.
For folks who insist on a riding mower, a good place to start is with the Troy-Bilt 13B226JD066 420cc Gas 30 in. 6-Speed Riding Mower. It has a 30-inch mower deck and a slim frame, making it great for smaller lawns with tight spaces. An 18-inch turning radius and 6-speed transmission makes it easy to control. There are few moving parts, and a small engine that is also fairly sturdy. This mower is well within the budget, at an MSRP of $999.99. The 10.5 horsepower engine is not the strongest around, but it is durable and can cover ground at a fair clip.
Also at the top of the price range, but with quite a number of features that seem like they would belong in a higher price range, is the A19A42 42 in. 19 HP Briggs & Stratton Automatic Gas Front-Engine Riding Mower. Unlike the Troy-Bilt, the appearance is more of a lawn tractor. With a 42-inch mowing deck, it can cover a lot of ground. It can also mow in reverse, which can be a handy feature. The 19 horsepower engine helps move along and push through higher or tougher grass. At an MSRP of $1,199.99, it hits the cieling of the budget.
This budget range offers a wide choice of mowers, including those we’ve covered in the last few weeks. Next week, we’ll raise the budget to $2,000, where you’ll start to see a lot of riding mowers, and plenty of conveniences and accessories.
